Akhtyamov will make his first career start on Long Island on Thursday.

Anthony Stolarz (lower body) was injured early in Wednesday's 4-0 loss to the Washington Capitals, resulting in Akhtyamov being recalled from the Marlies and suiting up for his first career NHL start. The 24-year-old goalie was a fourth-round pick of the Maple Leafs in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and has been serviceable this year at the AHL level, posting a 2.90 GAA and .903 SV% in 36 games (20-12-4). That said, the Maple Leafs enter Thursday's contest as significant +228 road underdogs against a New York Islanders team desperate to snap a four-game losing streak (0-4-0) and stay within reach of a Wild Card spot.

Stolarz will start against the Capitals on Wednesday.

Stolarz was not especially sharp in his most recent outing, allowing three goals on 24 shots (.875 SV%) in a 4-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks. The 32-year-old Stolarz has had a largely disappointing 2025-26 campaign, but he has posted solid numbers in his last eight appearances (3-2-2), with a 2.65 GAA and .913 SV%. The Maple Leafs enter Wednesday's contest as +136 home underdogs against a Washington Capitals team that needs to bounce back after an embarrassing 8-1 loss to the New York Rangers to keep their dwindling playoff hopes alive.
