Washington has signed Vincent Desharnais to a four-year, $4.2 million AAV contact ($16.8M total).

Desharnais, a towering 6'7 defenseman, had an impressive 2025-26 season with the San Jose Sharks, earning himself a sizeable four-year contract with the Washington Capitals worth $16.8 million ($4.2M AAV). The 30-year-old defenseman averaged 18:11 time-on-ice, recording seven points (1G / 6A) and 103 hits in 53 games.

Desharnais will be a healthy scratch vs. Winnipeg on Thursday.

Desharnais has appeared in 53 games for San Jose this season but will be one of four odd men out for Game 82 after it was announced he is a healthy scratch vs. Winnipeg. The 29-year-old closes out his first full season in San Jose, picking up a goal, seven points and 68 PIMs in 53 games played.

Desharnais (upper-body) will be a game-time decision vs. PHI on Saturday.

Desharnais played a full 19:51 time-on-ice in Thursday's 5-0 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, but is apparently dealing with an upper-body ailment that will make his status for Saturday uncertain. The 29-year-old Desharnais is averaging 17:34 time-on-ice and has five points (1G / 4A) in 40 games this season.

Desharnais is expected to be a healthy scratch vs. Vancouver on Friday.

Shakir Mukhamadullin and Vincent Desharnais will be healthy scratches on Friday against the Vancouver Canucks, allowing John Klingberg and Vincent Iorio to draw back into the lineup. The 29-year-old Desharnais has played all but four games for the Sharks this season, scoring two points (0G / 2A) while averaging 16:33 time-on-ice.

The Sharks acquired Desharnais from the Penguins on Wednesday in exchange for a 2028 fifth-round draft pick.

Desharnais leaves the Penguins after playing just ten games for the franchise. He was acquired from the Canucks just last month in the trade that sent Marcus Pettersson to Vancouver. The 28-year-old Desharnais has zero goals and three assists in 44 games this season.
