The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Tuesday that forward Evgeni Malkin is day-to-day with an upper-body injury and will not play in the team’s Tuesday night game against the Colorado Avalanche.
Forward Evgeni Malkin is day-to-day with an upper-body injury and will not play tonight versus Colorado.
The news comes a week after Malkin served a five-game suspension, then scored two goals in a 7-2 win for the Penguins over the Avalanche in Colorado.
Through 50 games this season, Malkin has 15 goals and 37 assists for 52 points, which ranks second on the Penguins in assists and fifth in points. Now in his 20th NHL season, he has 529 goals and 869 assists for 1,398 points in 1,263 career regular-season games.
Malkin is just two points away from becoming the 23rd player in NHL history to reach the 1,400-point mark. Earlier this season, Malkin’s teammate Sidney Crosby passed Penguins legend Mario Lemieux for eighth on the NHL’s all-time scoring list, and currently has 1,750 career regular-season points.
The 39-year-old Malkin is in the final season of a four-year, $24.4-million contract he signed in July 2022. He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Malkin has won the league Art Ross Trophy twice, leading the NHL in points with 113 points in 2008-09 and 109 in 2011-12, respectively. He won the Hart Trophy in 2011-12.
Malkin has also also played in 177 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, scoring 67 goals and adding 113 assists for 180 points. The 2004 No. 2 overall pick was a major factor in Pittsburgh winning three Stanley Cup championships in 2009, 2016 and 2017, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as Playoff MVP in 2009.
Going into Tuesday night, the Penguins are 35-19-16 with 86 points through 70 games, second in the Metropolitan Division.
