A veteran rearguard is going to be out a little longer than expected.

It was revealed on Tuesday that Ottawa Senators defenseman Nick Jensen will have surgery on his meniscus, taking him out of action for an extended period of time.

According to some reports, Jensen could miss around six weeks, which would keep him on the shelf for the remainder of the regular season.

It was reported last week that Jensen was considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury, with Jensen’s current ailment being unrelated to the nagging hip injury that plagued him for the latter half of the 2024-25 season, leading to surgery after the Senators were knocked out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

There have been no reports on when exactly Jensen suffered the knee injury.

The ailment comes at a bad time for the Senators. The 35-year-old had been having some good nights as Ottawa has been striving to stay in the playoff picture. The loss of Jensen takes away some needed experience for a young D-corps.

The Rogers, Minn. native has appeared in 61 games this season, scoring four goals and 13 assists for 17 points. He has averaged a little over 17 minutes of ice time per game, registering a plus/minus of -2. It’s a little above the production he displayed last year, in which he scored 21 points in 71 games. However, he had a +18 rating while averaging a hair over 20 minutes of ice time as he helped the Sens reach the postseason for the first time since 2017.

Jensen is in the final season of his three-year contract that he signed with the Washington Capitals in February 2023. The deal has a cap hit of $4.05 million.

The Senators (34-23-9) are sixth in the Atlantic Division, four points back of the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Ottawa next visits the Capitals on Wednesday night.
