The Pittsburgh Penguins have added depth on the wing at Friday’s trade deadline.

Pittsburgh has acquired forward Elmer Soderblom from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for the San Jose Sharks‘ 2026 third-round draft pick.

The Penguins had initially acquired San Jose’s 2026 third-round pick as part of the deal that netted them defenseman Erik Karlsson.

Soderblom was a surprise to see on the move, as there had been no indication the Red Wings were looking to shop him. Not only that, it’s a surprise to see Detroit selling a player at this point of the season, as they currently sit in third place in the Atlantic Division with a 35-20-7 record, and five points ahead of the closest team outside of the playoff picture.

Soderblom, 24, has two goals and an assist for three points in 39 games for the Red Wings this season. Despite this being his first season as a full-time NHLer, it’s been his worst production-wise, although he still hasn’t always been in the lineup. He missed seven games in November due to an undisclosed injury, along with 16 games as a healthy scratch.

Soderblom is in the first year of a two-year contract with a $1.125 million cap hit.

The Red Wings have otherwise been buyers at the deadline, although they only made a couple acquisitions. They acquired winger David Perron from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional 2026 fourth-round pick, and are also in the process of acquiring Justin Faulk from the St. Louis Blues.

The Penguins have been quite active on the market, although they’ve usually aimed for smaller, savvier moves to add depth to the team. Over the course of the season, they’ve acquired Stuart Skinner, Yegor Chinakhov, Ilya Solovyov and Brett Kulak, along with moving Kulak last week to bring in Samuel Girard.
