It appears the Edmonton Oilers will be without one of their depth forwards for at least a game.

On Friday, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch revealed that Trent Frederic is dealing with an injury, and there is no current timeline for his return.

The exact nature of Frederic’s injury is currently unknown, but he likely suffered the injury during Thursday’s 4-0 loss to the Florida Panthers. He left the game early and did not return for the entire third period.

Frederic, 29, has four goals and two assists for six points in 67 games this season. He is tied for second on the team with 58 penalty minutes.

Edmonton acquired the St. Louis native, along with forwards Max Jones and Petr Hauser, from the Boston Bruins at last season’s trade deadline in a three-team deal that saw the Bruins get defenseman Max Wanner and two draft picks, and the New Jersey Devils get forward Shance Lachance. Frederic only played in one regular season game for the Oilers last season, but contributed a goal and three assists for four points in 22 postseason games during Edmonton’s run to the Stanley Cup finals.

This past offseason, the Oilers signed Frederic to an eight-year, $30.8 million contract.

Initially selected 29th overall by the Bruins in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Frederic’s career-best campaign came in the 2023-24 season, when he put up 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points in 82 games. He has not come close to that type of production since.

With 77 points through 70 games, Edmonton currently sits second in the Pacific Division, and is in a tight three-way race for the division lead with the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks.

The Oilers will finish up a four-game homestand against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, before visiting the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday.
