The Calgary Flames are ruling out the return of their 2023 first-round draft pick until next season.

On Friday, the team confirmed that forward Sam Honzek will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

#Flames say Sam Honzek will not play again this season. Still, good news to see him back skating. Connor Zary and Yan Kuznetsov are still day-to-day with upper body injuries.

Honzek, 21, has not played since Calgary’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Winnipeg Jets on November 15th. In that game, he suffered an upper-body injury as a result of an awkward collision with teammate Mikael Backlund at the offensive blueline.

The Slovakian national underwent surgery to repair the injury on November 20th. He skated with the team on Friday for the first time since the surgery, but will not return to game action this season.

In 18 games for the Flames this season, Honzek had two goals and two assists for four points.

Honzek was selected 16th overall by the Flames in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft after his first North American season playing for the Vancouver Giants of the WHL, in which he notched 23 goals and 33 assists for 56 points in 43 games. The following season, he tallied 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points in 33 games for Vancouver. He also went scoreless in two games for the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers that season.

He played the majority of last season for the Wranglers, putting up eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points in 52 games. He also got his first look in the NHL last season, going scoreless in five games with the Flames.

With 68 points through 72 games, Calgary has the fourth worst record in the NHL and is well out of the playoff picture in the Western Conference.

The Flames will finish up a six-game homestand against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday before kicking off a six-game road trip by visiting the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.
