Flames acquire Brennan Othmann from Rangers for Jacob Battaglia

The Calgary Flames have added a player with first-round pedigree at Friday’s trade deadline.
The Flames have acquired winger Brennan Othmann from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Jacob Battaglia.
The Calgary Flames have acquired Brennan Othmann from the New York Rangers for Jacob Battaglia
Othmann, 23, was selected 16th overall from the OHL’s Flint Firebirds by the Rangers in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. After finishing his junior career with the Peterborough Petes as OHL champions in 2023, the Pickering, Ontario native joined New York’s organization for the 2023-24 season. Over three seasons as a professional, Othmann has played in 42 NHL games and managed just a goal and two assists for three points. Over 120 games played with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, he has put up 41 goals and 44 assists for 85 points.
Battaglia, 19, was Calgary’s second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. He was coming off a strong draft year with the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs, in which he notched 31 goals and 34 assists for 65 points in 67 games. Last season, he continued to show improvement with 40 goals and 50 assists for 90 points in 68 games. This season, however, Battaglia has seen his production tail off, with 26 goals and 17 assists for 43 points in 58 games split between the Frontenacs and the Firebirds. This drop off in his junior numbers could be why the Flames feel comfortable moving off the recent second-round pick.
This deal represents a rare hockey trade for the Flames and the Rangers, who had been clear sellers ahead of the deadline. Calgary dealt Nazem Kadri to the Colorado Avalanche on Friday for a bundle of future assets. The Rangers sent star winger Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings in February.
On Saturday, New York will play a matinee game against the New Jersey Devils, while Calgary will host the Carolina Hurricanes.
