Report: Sabres to sign Beck Malenstyn to six-year extension

It appears that the Buffalo Sabres will be locking up a valuable member of their forward depth.

As reported by Elliotte Friedman, the Sabres will be re-signing winger Beck Malenstyn to a six-year contract extension with an average annual value (AAV) of $3 million.

Malenstyn, 28, is coming off a 2025-26 season in which he had seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. He then contributed a goal and two assists for three points in Buffalo’s 13 postseason games.

Initially selected by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Malenstyn became a full-time professional in the 2018-19 season after the completion of his junior career in the Western Hockey League (WHL), spent mostly with the Calgary Hitmen. That year, he played 74 games with Washington’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Hershey Bears, notching seven goals and nine assists for 16 points.

In the 2019-20 season, the Delta, British Columbia native put up seven goals and eight assists for 15 points with in 46 games for Hershey. He also got his first taste of NHL action, going scoreless in three games for the Capitals.

Over the next two seasons, Malenstyn continued to spend the majority of his time in the AHL, playing a combined 105 regular season games for Hershey while totalling 16 goals and 10 assists for 26 points. He played 21 games up with Washington over that span, managing just two goals and one assist for three points.

Malenstyn made the full-time leap to the NHL in the 2023-24 season, registering six goals and 15 assists for 21 points over 81 games.

During the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, the Capitals traded Malenstyn to the Sabres for a second-round pick.

In the 2024-25 season, his first with Buffalo, Malenstyn scored four goals and added six assists for 10 points.
