The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired left wing Philippe Paradis from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for defenseman Kirill Gotovets today. He will be assigned to the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL.

Paradis, 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, has played in 36 games with the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League this season, recording a goal and eight points with 100 penalty minutes. He ranks fourth on the team for penalty minutes.

The Dallas Stars announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Cameron Gaunce from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Tomas Vincour. The team also announced that they have assigned Gaunce to the Texas Stars, of the AHL.

Gaunce, 23, has skated the last three seasons for the Lake Erie Monsters, Colorado’s development affiliate in the AHL. As a member of the Monsters, the 6-foot-1, 203-pound defenseman has posted 60 points (9G-51A), 272 penalty minutes and a plus-22 rating in 197 games.

The Dallas Stars announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Cameron Gaunce from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Tomas Vincour. The team also announced that they have assigned Gaunce to the Texas Stars of the AHL.

Vincour, 22, has played 86 career NHL games, posting 15 points (7G-8A), including one goal and one assist in 15 contests this season. The 6-foot-2 forward from Brno, Czech Rep., was Dallas’ fifth-round selection (129th overall) in the 2009 NHL Draft.

Clowe has waived his no trade clause and has been traded to the New York Rangers in exchange for SJ's 2nd, FLA's 3rd and conditional 2nd (on re-signing or winning two playoff series). If not, it becomes 5th.

The Rangers have had some serious scoring issues this season and they are adding Clowe who has no goals and 11 assists in 28 games this season. We will have to see where Clowe is placed in the Rangers lineup before knowing if he is going to become fantasy relevant again.

Dallas has traded Jaromir Jagr to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Lane MacDermid, Cody Payne and a conditional second round pick.

The Bruins failed to get a 500-goal scorer in Jarome Iginla but they have added a 679-goal scorer in Jagr. He brings veteran leadership with the ability to score even at the age of 41. He has 14 goals and 12 assists in 34 games this season. Jagr will definitely help the Bruins 24th ranked power-play.

The Canucks were desperately seeking another centre with Ryan Kesler out with a broken foot. Roy has four goals and 18 assists in 30 games with the Stars this season. He should continue to be a solid fantasy player with his new team.

Bergeron has only appeared in 12 games this season and scored just one goal and four assists. The 32-year-old defenseman posted 24 points in only 43 games last season. He is good on the power-play because he has a heavy shot, which should help the Hurricanes who rank last in the NHL in PP%. He should see plenty of PP time, which should increase his production and subsequently his fantasy value.

With the addition of Jordan Leopold recently expect Bouwmeester to play with either Alex Pietrangelo or Kevin Shattenkirk.

In order for any NHL trade to be processed successfully, all parties involved must abide by the league’s salary cap rules. The current NHL salary cap is $88M, meaning that each team’s total payroll must fall within the budgetary restriction.

The salary cap in the NHL is considered a “hard cap,” meaning that no team can exceed it. While the limitations around roster construction can be strict, there are still ways for teams to legally exceed the set limit that won’t cost teams a first-round pick.

In the playoffs, teams are technically able to exceed their cap space through the long-term injured reserve (LTIR). The LTIR allows teams to place injured players on extended leave (24+ calendar days or 10 NHL Games) and fill their roster spots based on their cap space heading into the regular season.

If a player is on the LTIR heading into the postseason, they can be activated regardless of if their re-addition to the team puts them over the salary cap.

Roster Limit

For any active NHL roster, they can only dress 23 skaters. While they’re able to move players up and down through their farm system (AHL/ECHL/International Players), they must abide by this player limit when it comes to active players dressed in each game.

This plays a big factor in determining trades, as teams will need to make salaries work to make the move official and fit the current team’s available roster spots.
