Islanders rookie forward Nino Niederreiter left during the first period of Saturday's match against the Stars with concussion-like symptoms, the team announced.

Niederreiter took a hard and clean hit from Stars defender Mark Fistric and is now out indefinitely. At this point you are likely safe to drop the young forward in one-year leagues.

Tyler Seguin, taken with the No. 2 pick in the 2010 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins, is this week's First Star, followed by Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard and Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews.

Toews contributed a pair of multi-goal efforts in the past week, including Sunday's 6-3 win against the Oilers. His second goal in the opening minute of the second period proved to be the game-winner. Toews has a three-game points streak going, compiling 4 goals and 2 assists over that span. At this point we still don't know where Niederreiter fits in with the Isles. The rookie has yet to play in a regular season game after getting injured in the preseason. He could get the full nine games before the team makes a decision.

The Detroit Red Wings have recalled skilled forward Gustav Nyquist from the Grand Rapids Griffins. He will make his NHL debut Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild at Joe Louis Arena (7:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net Detroit).

Nyquist has clearly impressed team brass with four goals and nine points over nine games at the AHL. Look for him to get a shot on a scoring line.

"I want to keep pushing myself," Toews said. "I've always wanted to be a great offensive player and I definitely worked on some things this offseason to improve in that situation. You always want to be one of the best players on your team and across the league. I feel like I could be one of those guys this year. People talk about it, but it's about time to fulfill that potential."

The sky is certainly the limit for Toews, who posted career highs in assists and points last season. At this point in his career, he should continue to improve, landing in the 35-goal, 75-point range. With so many question marks in the first round, the former 3rd overall pick certainly would not have been a reach.

#Isles place Nino Niederreiter and Trevor Gillies on IR with groin injuries.

Niederreiter was slated to start the season on the top line but won't due to this injury. Last season, the Swiss standout scored 41 goals and 70 points over 55 games with the Portland Winterhawks. Expect PA Parenteau to move back onto the top line for the time being.
