The Maple Leafs acquired Benning, a 2025 third-round draft pick, and a 2026 sixth-round draft pick from the Sharks on Wednesday in exchange for defenceman Timothy Liljegren.

Benning will likely fill a depth role for the Maple Leafs and does not figure to earn a lot of immediate playing time. He was yet to register a point and was a -5 through seven games with the Sharks this season. Benning leaves San Jose after totaling one goal and 25 assists in 98 games over parts of three seasons.

Thrun will draw out of the lineup alongside Klim Kostin and Givani Smith as the Sharks opt to get some fresh bodies into the lineup for the tail-end of their back-to-back. Will Smith, Ethan Cardwell, and Jack Thompson will enter the lineup in their place.

Before Saturday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins when Stolarz allowed four goals on 34 shots (.882 SV%), he had allowed two or fewer goals in each of his previous five contests (3-2-0). The 30-year-old netminder has a solid 2.19 GAA and .927 SV% in six appearances. The Maple Leafs enter the action on Monday as slight -101 road underdogs against the undefeated Winnipeg Jets (8-0-0).

In his third season with the Maple Leafs, McCabe has been rewarded with a five-year, $22.55 million contract extension. The 31-year-old McCabe has been a defensive staple for the Maple Leafs since joining the club and has three points (0G / 3A), a +6 plus/minus, 17 blocks, and 19 hits in nine games this season.

The 26-year-old Woll was projected to be the opening night starter for the Maple Leafs but suffered a last-minute lower-body ailment, resulting in him missing the first seven games and pivoting the starting goalie role to Anthony Stolarz. That said, Stolarz has been terrific filling in this season, posting a 1.83 GAA and .938 SV% in five games (3-2-0), which could pose an obstacle for Woll's playing time if he is unable to get off to a hot start. In 25 games played in 2023-24, Woll had a 12-11-1 record with a 2.94 GAA and .907 SV%.

Hildeby was called up prior to the season-opening game for the Maple Leafs after Joseph Woll went out of the lineup with a lower-body injury. The 23-year-old Hildeby was limited to action in back-to-back contests, posting mixed results with a 4.03 GAA and .869 SV% in two outings (1-1-0).

On the back end of a back-to-back, with Joseph Woll (lower body) not ready to make his return, the Maple Leafs will turn to Hildeby for his second start of the season. The 23-year-old Hildeby played the back end of a back-to-back earlier this season and recorded a victory, posting a solid 2.02 GAA and .913 SV%. The Maple Leafs enter action on Tuesday as -192 road favorites against a Columbus Blue Jackets with a 2-3-0 record.

Joshua (testicular cancer) is expected to make his season debut in the next 1-2 weeks.

In mid-September, the Canucks announced that 28-year-old Dakota Joshua had been diagnosed with testicular cancer and successfully had a tumor removed but would not be ready for the start of training camp. The fifth-year winger is coming off his best season in 2023-24, with 18 goals, 32 points, 60 PIMs, 84 SOG, and a +19 plus/minus through 63 games played and could return to the lineup by November.
