New York Islanders News

Varlamov will start vs. the Islanders on Tuesday.

Varlamov allowed five goals on 37 shots in the Colorado’s 5-2 loss to the Canucks last Tuesday. Varly was given Thursday off after starting the seven previous games and ended up sitting for two in a row because Reto Berra was rewarded an extra start after playing well vs. Toronto. Varlamov gets back between the pipes with a 2-4-4 record, 2.75 GAA and .925 SV%.

Varlamov starts in goal for the Avalanche.

Varlamov stopped 49 of 51 shots in the Avalanche's 3-2 shootout loss to the Sharks on Tuesday. Despite averaging 33.8 saves and posting a .933 SV% in his last five starts Varlamov is 1-1-3 over that stretch. Besides a seven goal explosion vs. the Canucks, the Avs have not scored in front of Varly so far, but that could change tonight against an Isles team averaging 3.44 goals against per game.

Varlamov will get the nod for the Avs on Tuesday.

Varlamov allowed two goals on 28 shots in a OT loss to the Jets on Sunday. Since returning from an upper-body injury, Varlamov has gone 1-0-1 while allowing five goals on 57 shots (.912 SV%). Despite an offensive explosion against the Canucks on Friday, the Avalanche are having a hard time scoring goals to start the year. They sit 26th in the NHL with 2.22 goals per game.

Varlamov starts vs. Winnipeg this afternoon.

Varlamov allowed three goals on 29 shots in a win over the Canucks in his return to the crease on Friday. The W was his first of the season and their should be many more to come. The Avalanche finally found their offence, putting seven on the board on Friday and it should continue today in Winnipeg.

The Islanders recalled Anders Lee from Bridgeport (AHL)

Lee, 24, has three goals and two assists in five games with Bridgeport so far this season. He was close to making the Islanders out of camp, but it didn't take him long to get recalled. He had 14 points (9G / 5A) in 22 games with the Isles last season. There is a good chance he will centre the Islanders second line with Brock Nelson and either Ryan Strome or Nikolai Kulemin on his wing tonight.

Anders Lee
Varlamov (groin) will be back in goal on Friday.

Varlamov missed three games with a groin injury, but he will be back between the pipes tonight against the Canucks. Varly has yet to record a win, while posting a 3.80 GAA and .910 SV% in his first three starts. Tonight he faces a Vancouver team coming off of a 4-1 win over the Blues last night.

The Canucks have sent Bo Horvat (shoulder) to Utica (AHL) for a conditioning stint.

Horvat has been out with shoulder injury, but sending him on a conditioning stint is a good sign that the Canucks are planning to keep Horvat with the big club. He can stay with Utica for a maximum of two weeks.

Bo Horvat
The Avalanche have placed Varlamov (groin) on injured reserve.

Varlamov participated in the morning skate Thursday and was the scheduled starter. He likely injured his groin at the very end of practice, or tweaked after injuring it in Tuesday's 3-2 overtime loss at Toronto. The Avs said Varlamov (0-2-1) should be available Oct. 24 against Vancouver. As a result of the injury, Reto Berra will start tonight and Calvin Pickard has been recalled.

Horvat (shoulder) skated on his own today today, could be ready in 3-4 days.

Horvat, 19, has missed time due to a shoulder injury suffered in the preseason, but he is nearing a return which means he is nearing his NHL debut. The 2013 ninth overall pick had 30 goals and 44 assists (74 points) in 54 games with the London Knights of the OHL last season. He is a big body at 6-foot, 206 lbs. and is ready to make an impact at the NHL level.

Bo Horvat
Varlamov starts on Tuesday vs. the Maple Leafs.

Varlamov allowed two goals on 33 shots in a 3-0 loss to the Wild on Saturday. Overall he allowed seven goals on 71 shots (.901 SV%) in the home-and-home series while the Avalanche scored zero goals. On Tuesday, he takes on a Leafs team coming off of a big win over the Rangers on Sunday.

Varlamov will be back in between the pipes vs. Minnesota on Saturday.

Varlamov was yanked after 40 minutes after allowing five goals on 38 shots in Colorado's 5-0 loss to the Wild on Thursday. It was not entirely Varlamov's fault, the Avs simply were not ready for the Wild who came out flying. Minny set a franchise record with 48 shots on the night, don't expect that to happen again, look for Varly to bounce-back on home ice.
