Rittich is day-to-day with lower-body injury.

Rittich will not be available for Wednesday’s game in Detroit, which means that Mike Smith will likely start and Jon Gillies has been recalled to serve as the backup. There is no update on how long Rittich is expected to be out, so treat it as day-to-day until the Flames release more information.

David Rittich
Rittich will start Thursday in Winnipeg.

Rittich gave up four goals on 36 shots in the Flames loss to the Lightning last Thursday. Rittich has lost two straight but remains a solid 3-2-1 with a 2.47 GAA and .920 SV% in seven December appearances. Even though he’s been steady all season, Rittich is a risky option in Winnipeg—the Jets are 13-4-2 on home-ice and rank fourth in the NHL in goal-scoring (3.53 GF/pg).

Varlamov will start Saturday in Arizona.

Varlamov allowed three goals on 20 shots in Colorado’s loss to the Islanders on Monday. Varlamov is in the middle of a rough stretch, having lost four of his last five while allowing a combined 21 goals on 135 shots (.844 SV%). Despite starting in the second game of a back-to-back, Varlamov has a good chance to get back in the win column in Arizona.
