Buffalo Sabres News

Alexandar Georgiev is in the starter's crease at Colorado's morning skate.

Georgiev will likely start for the eighth straight game and search for his sixth win over that stretch. Georgiev has helped the Avalanche collect a point in five straight (4-0-1) and has a save percentage above .900 in four of those games, a rarity for the inconsistent netminder this season. Georgiev and the Avalanche are sizeable -182 home favourites on Tuesday against the Islanders, who have lost two of their last three games (1-2-0), including being outscored 10-1 in two games against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Georgiev allowed five unanswered goals on 22 shots (.815 SV%) in Wednesday's disappointing 5-4 overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes but will return to the crease on Friday against the St. Louis Blues. The Avalanche are -163 road favourites against the Blues despite being pummelled 8-2 by them in their previous matchup on November 11th. Before his late-game collapse against the Coyotes on Wednesday, Georgiev won two straight games, saving 65 of 70 shots (.929

Thompson has nine goals and ten assists in 26 games this season. Thompson is expected to draw back into the Sabres lineup Saturday vs. Columbus.

Alex Lyon will start Friday vs. Nashville.

Lyon has been on injured reserve with an upper-body injury after exiting a December 16th contest against the Philadelphia Flyers in the second period. In his absence, the Red Wings, also without Ville Husso, went 1-5-0 while relying predominantly on James Reimer. Before his injury, Lyon was stellar, allowing one goal or fewer in four of his last six games (4-2-0), posting a tremendous .938 SV%. The Red Wings will face off against the Nashville Predators, who have lost two straight games (0-2-0).

Georgiev will start in Arizona on Wednesday.

Georgiev will be in search of a third straight victory on Wednesday as he gets the nod for the Avalanche's first game following the holiday break. Georgiev has been steady of late after enduring a rocky start to his 2023-24 season, posting a .929 SV% while picking up the win in each of his last two appearances. He leads the league with 17 wins to his name despite an underwhelming .899 SV%. He's in a great spot to keep things rolling on Wednesday with the Avalanche being -165 favourites in Arizona.

Devon Levi will start Wednesday vs. Boston.

Omitting a horrible performance on December 19 when he allowed four goals on 18 shots (.778 SV%), Levi has been tremendous this month, posting a .932 SV% in five December contests (4-0-1). Levi will return to the crease for the Sabres on Wednesday, his third start in their last four games, in a challenging matchup against the struggling Boston Bruins. The Sabres are +130 road underdogs against a Bruins team that has lost four straight (0-2-2).
