The Devils' captain remains questionable for their opening game Thursday in Philadelphia as he returned to practice Tuesday for the first time since September 26th, 2022. Hischier enjoyed his most successful season in 2021-22 finishing with 21 goals and 60 points in 70 games placing him second on the Devils in scoring. The 23-year-old should find himself a lock in New Jersey's top-six and atop their first powerplay unit.

Hischier suffered the injury on Thursday and will be re-evaluated a few days before the Devils' season starts. This would be a huge loss for the Devils to open the season, and it would thrust either Erik Haula or Dawson Mercer into an elevated role.


Hischier will miss his third straight game with an illness, the Devils have gone 0-1-1 in the previous two games. Jesper Boqvist has played an elevated role with Hischier is out.


Hischier missed the last three games with a lower-body injury but will play Tuesday in Vancouver. Hischier figures to replace Mason Geertsen in the lineup and should be back in his second-line centre role.

If he does play, expect Hischier to replace either Nathan Bastian or Nick Merkley and he could be eased into a bottom-6 role, since it's his first game since March 10th of last year.

Hischier suffered a leg injury while training in Switzerland and will not be available for the opening of training camp. Hischier did not have surgery and the Devils do not consider it a long-term injury. The fourth-year centre could be ready for the start of the season but may get out of the gates slowly with a limited training camp.
