Coghlan served as the Hurrincanes' extra defenseman during their back-to-back on Thursday and Friday. With the Hurricanes off until Monday, Coghlan goes back to Springfield, where he could play on Saturday and Sunday.

Coghlan has a goal, an assist, six PIMs, and a -1 plus/minus through five games with Springfield (AHL) and has been recalled Tuesday. The 25-year-old defenseman is in his fourth NHL season and had three assists, and 29 SOG in 17 games played with Carolina in 2022-23. With the injury to Brett Pesce (lower body), Coghlan will provide the Hurricanes with some defensive depth.

Coghlan appeared in just 17 games for the Hurricanes last season, picking up three assists, 29 SOG and 11 hits. The 25-year-old will likely fill a similar role as the Hurricanes' No.7 defenseman in 2024 and will only see playing time when a member of the core blueline gets hurt.

Coghlan was a late addition to the lineup in Carolina's previous game after Calvin de Haan was announced out due to injury. Coghlan collected 2 PIM across 14:59 TOI in his debut. He will head back to the player's press box Thursday.

Coghlan was not on the ice for the morning skate and is not expected to play because of the flu. Zach Whitecloud will return from a six-game absence to replace Coghlan.
