Capitals re-sign Timothy Liljegren to two-year contract extension

The Washington Capitals announced Wednesday they re-signed defenseman Timothy Liljegren to a two-year, $6.5-million contract extension that will pay him an annual average value of $3.25 million.
The 27-year-old blueliner recorded one goal and 10 assists for 11 points, averaging 19:51 of ice time in 47 games with the Capitals and San Jose Sharks in 2025-26. He was acquired by Washington in a trade last March for a 2026 fourth-round pick.
Through seven NHL seasons, Liljegren has 21 goals and 72 assists for 93 points in 311 career regular-season games with the Capitals, Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs. He also has one assist in 13 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.
His best statistical season came in 2021-22 with Toronto, where he posted five goals and 18 assists for 23 points, averaging 16:24 of ice time in 61 games. He’s reached the 20-point mark twice in five full NHL campaigns.
Liljegren, taken No. 17 overall by the Leafs in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, spent parts of five seasons in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies, where he posted 11 goals and 63 assists for 74 points in 150 regular-season games. His best AHL season came in 2019-20, where he recorded five goals and 25 assists for 30 points in 40 games.
The Capitals finished the 2025-26 season with a 43-30-9 record and 95 points, finishing fourth in the Metropolitan Division and falling four points shy of a Wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. Alex Ovechkin led the team in goals with 32 and points with 64, while forward Dylan Strome had a team-leading 39 assists.
