Canucks trade Kiefer Sherwood to Sharks for Clayton, two picks

The Vancouver Canucks have traded forward Kiefer Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for AHL defenseman Cole Clayton and two second-round picks, the club announced Monday morning.
Sherwood, 30, has 17 goals and 23 points in 44 games with the Canucks this year. The 6′ left wing is under contract through the end of the 2025-26 season at a $1.5 million cap hit.
In return, the Canucks received San Jose’s own second-round selections in the 2026 and 2027 NHL Drafts. They also received Clayton, an undrafted 25-year-old right-shot defender with two goals and five points in 33 games with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda this season.
General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the #Canucks have acquired Cole Clayton and 2nd round picks in both the 2026 and 2027 NHL Entry Drafts from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Kiefer Sherwood.

The Canucks originally signed Sherwood to a two-year contract as an unrestricted free agent from the Nashville Predators in 2024. In his first season in Vancouver, the Columbus, Ohio product scored 19 goals and 40 points in 78 games while setting an NHL record with 462 hits.
Sherwood has averaged a career-high 17:32 per game with the Canucks this season and is already two goals shy of matching his best mark in that category. This move signals the continuation of a sell-off process for Vancouver, which has lost seven straight games and currently sits in last place in the NHL with a 16-27-5 record.
In San Jose, Sherwood will have an opportunity to help his new team push for a playoff spot. Led by young star Macklin Celebrini, the Sharks currently occupy the second wild card position in the Western Conference with a 24-20-3 record, putting them in a three-way tie in the standings with the L.A. Kings and Anaheim Ducks.
An undrafted player himself, Sherwood spent his collegiate career at Miami University in Ohio before turning pro in the Ducks organization in 2018. He bounced back and forth between the AHL and NHL over parts of five seasons with the Ducks and Colorado Avalanche to begin his career before finding more of a foothold with the Predators between 2022 and 2024.
Through 309 career games with the Ducks, Avalanche, Predators, and Canucks, Sherwood has collected 60 goals and 121 points. He’s added a goal and an assist in eight playoff contests with Colorado and Nashville.
