Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin sent shockwaves through the hockey world last week when word spread that he had requested a trade from the franchise that drafted him in the first round in 2014.

On Monday, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reported that Larkin, who has a full no-trade clause, had a three-team wishlist of the Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights and Minnesota Wild.

Larkin’s reported wish list of just three teams, none of which have extensive prospect or draft capital to offer Detroit in return, generated buzz among hockey fans who are wondering why, if Larkin is so eager to leave the Red Wings, he would have such a limited list of teams that he would find suitable.

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discussed whether or not trade protection should, or even could, be modified in the event a player with such protection requests a trade.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Question in the YouTube from Brian, #AskDFO: ‘Could the CBA change with no trade clauses or no moves if a player requests a trade?’ So basically what Brian saying is, hey, could they add something into the CBA where if a player requests a deal, all of the sudden, their no-movement clause or no-trade clause is null and void? I mean, I’ll answer that. Like, no. The NHLPA would never agree to that.

Carter Hutton: Yeah, I think there is a factor, and I get what he’s saying, right? I get it’s like, well you ask for a no movement clause and now you’re gonna hold us hostage and be like, ‘I’ll only go to these teams.’ I think it should be a factor of, then you have to play. Like there’s got to be some sort of sense of like if we can’t get a deal done outside of that, you wanted the no-movement clause. You’re stuck here, as a situation where you’re gonna play for your team. And again, I don’t think it’s something that the PA would definitely buy into, but it’s actually a great thought and I love the question.
