Seattle Kraken forward Jaden Schwartz left Saturday’s game against the Ottawa Senators and did not return after a scary-looking incident in which he took a skate to his face.

Schwartz, 33, logged 6:27 of ice time over nine shifts before being hit up high with Nick Cousins’s skate late in the first period. The 5’10” winger left the ice under his own power and immediately went down the tunnel to Seattle’s locker room.

The Kraken ruled out the possibility of Schwartz returning to the game as the second period began at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. The Senators led the Kraken by a 4-2 score after 40 minutes of play on Saturday.

Schwartz is midway through his fifth year with the Kraken after signing with the club as a free agent prior to their inaugural season. The Wilcox, Sask. product has 10 goals and 21 points in 41 games with the Kraken this year.

The St. Louis Blues originally selected Schwartz in the first round (No. 14 overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. After spending two seasons at Colorado College, Schwartz turned pro with the Blues at the end of the 2011-12 season and quickly developed into a top-six forward with the club.

Schwartz had his best individual season with the Blues in 2014-15, setting career highs with 28 goals and 63 points in 75 games. But his best overall run in St. Louis came during the 2019 playoffs, in which he racked up 12 goals and 20 points in 26 games to help the Blues win their first and only Stanley Cup championship.

In 852 career NHL games over parts of 15 seasons with the Blues and Kraken, Schwartz has collected 232 goals and 548 points. He’s added 31 goals and 64 points in 102 playoff contests with the two clubs.
