The right addition could be a difference maker for Wings in mushy Eastern Conference

The Detroit Red Wings have proven to be one of the major surprises of the 2025-26 NHL season.
After years of waiting for general manager Steve Yzerman’s plan to lead to tangible results on the ice, the Red Wings find themselves narrowly atop the Atlantic Division at the midway point of the year.
With no clear juggernauts in their way, this group led by a Norris-caliber season from Moritz Seider and excellent contributions from captain Dylan Larkin along with the team’s leading scorer Alex DeBrincat, Detroit has a chance to not only return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but to make some real noise when they get there.
On Monday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by Daily Faceoff Managing Fantasy Editor Brock Seguin to discuss what Detroit could do to separate themselves from the field in the East.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Let’s keep the Red Wings talk going because I kind of actually like that we’ve gone down this path. The Red Wings, third-best points percentage in the Eastern Conference… The East is so mushy, and I think you can look at it and go it is the year where a team like Detroit… maybe making that one right addition will be the difference because everything seems so close. Where would you like to see Yzerman address?
Brock Seguin: I still think the Red Wings’ biggest need is on the blue line. The secondary scoring has really kind of solidified itself as of late. Andrew Copp has been tremendous. He’s really kind of rediscovered his game here… I think if I had one ask it’s on the blue line. They need somebody on that second pair. They rely a little bit too heavily on Simon Edvinsson and Moritz Seider who have been spectacular, but I think that second pair could use some help.
