Martone, Mercer added to Canada’s World Championship roster

Hockey Canada announced two additions to its roster for the IIHF men’s World Hockey Championship in Zurich and Fribourg, adding Philadelphia Flyers right winger Porter Martone and New Jersey Devils centre Dawson Mercer to the roster.
The pair join Canada’s previously announced group of 23 players, which is led by Macklin Celebrini, who captains the senior national team for the first time in his career at 19 years old, with alternates John Tavares and Ryan O’Reilly.
Martone joins the roster after his Flyers fell out of the second round of the NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs in a four-game sweep against the Carolina Hurricanes. As a rookie this season, Martone amassed four goals and six assists in just nine regular-season games, after joining the Flyers from Michigan State University, where he scored 25 goals and 25 assists for 50 points in 35 games.
Following his NCAA season and brief nine-game regular season stint, the Peterborough, Ontario native dove into NHL postseason action, where he scored two goals and three assists in the Flyers’ 10 games against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hurricanes.
Mercer, meanwhile, joins the Canadian squad after scoring 20 goals and 22 assists in 82 games with the Devils this season, which marked the fifth straight year he has played without missing an NHL regular-season game.
Internationally, both have represented Canada at the U20 World Junior level, with Mercer suiting up in 2020 and 2021, while Martone wore his country’s colors at the 2025 and 2026 tournaments.
Canada defeated France in a pre-tournament exhibition game earlier in the week and will open the World Championships against Sweden on Friday, before continuing pool play against each of Italy, Denmark, Norway, Slovenia, Slovakia and Czechia.
Canada has not won the men’s World Championship since 2023 and has missed the podium at the last two tournaments.
