Shorthanded Senators put on defensive clinic against Rangers

The Ottawa Senators dominated the New York Rangers in their 2-1 win on Monday, holding the Blueshirts to just 10 shots in the game. Shane Pinto and Warren Foegele scored for the Sens, and James Reimer stood tall in the Ottawa net, only facing 10 total shots but stopping nine of them to get the win.
The team is now 37-24-9 with 83 points through 70 games, good for fifth in the Atlantic Division and two points back of the second Wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. With 12 games to go in the 2025-26 regular season, The Senators are going to need to string together more wins, as well as hope for any combination of the Detroit Red Wings, New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets and Boston Bruins to lose some games.
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Jonny Lazarus and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss the Sens’ victory and how they look going forward.
Jonny Lazarus: What did you make of that performance last night from the Senators? Or was it more about how bad the Rangers were?
Carter Hutton: Uhhh, a little bit of both. Credit to Mika Zibanejad for playing his 1,000th career NHL regular-season game, that’s unbelievable. It’s been a tough role for him this year.
But when I look at James Reimer, the first thing I thought of was past performances in games I played in, and I wonder over his 535 career regular-season games if Reimer ever faced less shots. What an easy night for him.
But something we noted last night was the Sens’ forecheck and how Ottawa wasn’t giving them anything up front. I thought it was really impressive in a game they must win.
