The New York Rangers have locked up one of their college prospects.

On Saturday, the team announced that they have signed defenseman Drew Fortescue to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Fortescue, 20, was selected by the Rangers in the third round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

In 35 games for the Boston College Eagles at the collegiate level this season, Fortescue put up four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. Boston College’s season ended on Friday after a 4-3 overtime loss to UConn in the Hockey East semifinals.

In the 2024-25 season for Boston College, Fortescue registered no goals and 11 assists. In the 2023-23 season, his first with the Eagles, he had four goals and four assists for eight points. He also won gold at the 2024-25 IIHF World Junior Championships as a member of the United States’ team, where he went scoreless in seven games.

Fortescue is somewhat of a hometown kid for the Rangers, as he hails from Pearl River, New York, which is approximately only an hour-long drive from Madison Square Garden.

In Steven Ellis’ ranking of New York’s top ten prospects this past offseason, Fortescue came in as the ninth-best prospect in the Rangers’ pipeline. Ellis noted that the 6’2″, 195-pound Fortescue is “fantastic in transition and makes smart, quick decisions with the puck, but he isn’t spectacular in anything, specifically.”

As New York continues to work through its self-described “retool” and embrace the transition into a new era of Rangers hockey, young, homegrown players such as Fortescue will be integral in laying the ground for success in the coming years.

With just 64 points through 69 games, New York is in the final stretch of a difficult and disappointing season. They are currently in last place in the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers will host the Winnipeg Jets for a matinee game on Sunday.
