Wild place Marcus Foligno on IR with lower-body injury

The Minnesota Wild have placed forward Marcus Foligno on the injured reserve list after he sustained a lower-body injury in their 5-2 loss to the Utah Mammoth on Friday.
Foligno, 34, took one shot, racked up four minutes in penalties, and logged 12:34 of ice time over 19 shifts in the loss. Wild head coach John Hynes did not provide any further specifics on Foligno’s injury prior to Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Blues.
Through 48 games with the Wild this season, Foligno has six goals, 11 points, a minus-11 rating, and 58 penalty minutes. The Buffalo, N.Y. product is under contract with the Wild through 2028 at a $4 million cap hit.
#mnwild place Marcus Foligno on the Injured Reserve. Yesterday before the game John Hynes said they don’t have an update on Marcus Foligno other than lower-body and won’t play Sunday. Bill Guerin talked about how hard it is to replace a player like Foligno at the deadline.
Foligno is currently in his ninth season as a member of the Wild since being acquired from his hometown Buffalo Sabres in June of 2017. The 6’3″, 226-pound winger has helped the Wild reach the playoffs on six separate occasions during his tenure.
Originally a fourth-round pick (No. 104 overall) of the Sabres in the 2009 NHL Draft, Foligno made his NHL debut with the Sabres in the 2011-12 season after wrapping up his junior career with the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves. He established himself as a quality crash-and-bang bottom-six winger over parts of six seasons in Buffalo to begin his career.
After the 2016-17 season, the Sabres traded Foligno, Tyler Ennis, and a 2018 third-round pick to the Wild in exchange for Jason Pominville, Marco Scandella, and a 2018 fourth-round pick. Foligno has enjoyed some of his greatest NHL success in Minnesota, setting career highs in goals (23), assists (19), points (42), penalty minutes (112), and plus-minus (+25) in 74 games with the club in the 2021-22 season.
Through 923 career NHL games over 15 seasons split between the Sabres and Wild, Foligno has collected 146 goals and 334 points. He’s added five goals and 11 points in 34 career playoff games with Minnesota.
