Sharks’ Celebrini signs five-year extension at highest AAV in NHL history

The San Jose Sharks announced Wednesday they signed forward Macklin Celebrini to a five-year, $94-million contract extension that will pay him an average annual value of $18.8 million starting in 2027-28.

“I couldn’t be happier to sign an extension today,” Celebrini said in a press release. “My teammates and I are ready to take another step toward the ultimate goal of bringing a Stanley Cup to this city and its incredible fans. I can’t wait to get going.”

Celebrini, 20, scored 45 goals and added 70 assists for 115 points with San Jose in 2025-26, breaking the franchise record for the most points in a single season. He finished fourth in the NHL in goals, seventh in assists and fourth in points.

In just two seasons, the North Vancouver, B.C., native has 70 goals and 108 assists for 170 points in 152 career regular-season games.

Sharks’ general manager Mike Grier said the team was “extremely excited” to secure Celebrini as “the centerpiece of a core of talented players.”

“In just two seasons as a teenager in the National Hockey League and on the international stage, Macklin has established himself as one of the premier players in the world,” said Grier. 

Celebrini was taken by the Sharks with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. Before turning professional, he spent one season in the NCAA with Boston University, where in just 38 games he recorded 32 goals and 32 assists for 64 points, earning the Hobey Baker Award for the top player in the country.

Internationally, Celebrini has represented Canada on several occasions, including the 2026 Winter Olympics, where he scored five goals and added five assists for 10 points in six games, earning a silver medal. He was also part of the 2024 World Junior Championship squad, where he finished with four goals and four assists for eight points.
