Henrik Sedin’s son named to Canada’s U-20 soccer team

After a disastrous 2025-26 season for the Vancouver Canucks that saw them finish dead last in the NHL with 58 points, Canucks fans were probably pining for the days when Henrik and Daniel Sedin led the team to five straight division titles. The Canucks themselves evoked Sedin-era nostalgia when they hired Henrik and Daniel as co-presidents of hockey operations, and now it appears Canadian soccer could be entering a Sedin era of its own.
On Saturday, Henrik’s son Valter Sedin was named to Canada’s under-20 men’s soccer team that will compete in the 2026 Maurice Revello Tournament which will take place from May 31st to June 14th in France.
Valter, 19, is a midfielder that currently plays for Hammarby IF’s under-19 club in Sweden. He grew up playing youth soccer for the development program Fusion FC based in Richmond, British Colunbia, before joining the academy belonging to the Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS in 2020. In 2022, he won the Whitecaps Academy under-15 Student-Athlete Award. In 2024, he won their under-17 Student-Athlete Award. He joined Hammarby in February of 2025. He has eligibility to play for either of Canada or Sweden internationally.
Canada will compete with Japan, Venezuela, Portugal, and Ivory Coast in Group B at the Maurice Revello Tournament. The tournament will be an important test for Canada ahead of this summer’s 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship, which will take place from July 24th to August 9th in Mexico.
It will be a big summer for Canadian soccer in general, as the Canadian men’s soccer team will participate in just their third ever World Cup, with their first match against Bosnia and Herzegovina set for June 12th. Canada will also be one of the host countries for the World Cup, with seven matches in Vancouver and six in Toronto.
