The Philadelphia Flyers have fired head coach Dave Hakstol and named Scott Gordon as their interim head coach.

It has been a tumultuous season for the Flyers, which started with the firing of GM Ron Hextall on November 26th. Hakstol has been fired after going 12-15-4 in their first 31 games but they reached a new low during their west coast road trip. The Flyers lost their last four games of a five-game road trip while being outscored 22-to-8.

Hakstol was in his fourth season with Philadelphia and led them to the playoffs in two of the first three years. The Flyers have struggled with injuries, especially between the pipes. They are currently on their sixth goalie after recalling top prospect Carter Hart after two and a half months as a pro.

Gordon was named interim coach but there are reports that former Chicago Blackhawks’ head coach Joel Quenneville will be hired.

Gordon is a former head coach of the New York Islanders where he went 64-94-23 from 2008-to-2010. Gordon spent the last three years with the Flyers’ AHL affiliate in Lehigh Valley and will serve as Philadelphia’s head coach for the time being.

With Hakstol out of the picture, the Flyers shuffled their forward lines at practice on Monday afternoon:

  • 1️⃣ Claude Giroux — Nolan Patrick — Travis Konecny
  • 2️⃣ Wayne Simmonds — Sean Couturier — Jakub Voracek
  • 3️⃣ James van Riemsdyk — Scott Laughton — Michael Raffl
  • 4️⃣ Oskar Lindblom — Phil Varone — Dale Weise
