Red Wings sign Dominik Shine to two-year contract extension

A seasoned veteran is going to be playing in his home state just a little bit longer.
Late Saturday night, the Detroit Red Wings announced that they have signed forward Dominik Shine to a two-year, two-way contract extension. The deal is set to kick in next season and carry through the 2027-28 campaign.

— Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) January 11, 2026Shine is in the final season of his two-year, two-way contract that he signed with the Wings in the middle of the 2024-25 season. It was the first NHL deal the Pinckney, Mich. native signed in his career, and it led to him making his debut with the Red Wings on Jan. 27 against the Los Angeles Kings. Shine’s first NHL game came in his eighth season of pro hockey.
Shine played nine games with Detroit in the latter half of the season, notching an assist on Feb. 1 against the Calgary Flames. He has to appear in an NHL contest this year.
Every other game of Shine’s pro career has been spent with the Red Wings’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. The undrafted forward started his career as a scrappy depth player, not being afraid to drop his mitts. While he isn’t afraid to get rough now and then, the 32-year-old has developed into a solid two-way player and leader in the Griffins dressing room.
Last season, he set a career high with 46 points, scoring 14 goals and 32 assists in 61 games. This year, after being named team captain, Shine is off to a great start with the best team in the AHL, scoring 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points in just 26 games.
In 509 regular-season games in the NHL, Shine has notched 89 goals and 122 points for 211 points, with another 10 points coming in 22 Calder Cup Playoff games.
The Red Wings (27-15-4) are first in the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning for first place. The Griffins (29-2-1-1) hold the best record in the AHL by 11 points.
