One of the driving forces behind the Detroit Red Wings‘ terrific season is going to miss some time.

When speaking to the media, head coach Todd McLellan announced that goaltender John Gibson will not be in the lineup when the Red Wings take on the Vegas Golden Knights and is considered day-to-day.

In response, the Red Wings called up goaltender Sebastian Cossa from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, under emergency conditions.

Gibson suffered an upper-body injury during the first period of Detroit’s Monday afternoon game against the Nashville Predators and didn’t return for the second. Cam Talbot came in relief, shutting the door while helping Detroit grab a 4-2 win to cap off a solid road trip after the Olympic break.

After the contest, McLellan later revealed that Gibson took a “stinger” in the shoulder. Gibson did skate on Wednesday, with McLellan stating that he’s feeling better.

It goes without saying how important Gibson has been to the Wings’ success as they look to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in a decade. He has been one of the best in the NHL since the beginning of December, keeping Detroit near the top of the Atlantic Division.

In 39 games, the 32-year-old has a record of 23-12-2, with a 2.57 goals-against average, a .906 save percentage and four shutouts.

Cossa is regarded as the future of Detroit’s net. He has been developing into one of the top netminders in the AHL, and is helping the Griffins have one of the best seasons in league history. In 31 games played thus far, the Hamilton, Ont. native has a record of 24-4-3, sitting tied with Providence Bruins goaltender for the most wins in the AHL. His 1.99 GAA and .927 SV% are second to DiPietro as well. Grand Rapids and Providence are battling it out for the best record in the AHL.

Cossa has appeared in just one NHL game, which came on Dec. 9, 2024, as he earned his first win with the Wings in relief against the Buffalo Sabres.

The Red Wings (35-20-6) are third in the Atlantic, four points back of the Tampa Bay Lightning for first.
