Blue Jackets sign Charlie Coyle to six-year contract extension

One of the NHL’s top pending free agents is staying put.
The Columbus Blue Jackets announced Tuesday they signed forward Charlie Coyle to a six-year, $36-million contract extension with a cap hit of $6 million through the 2031-32 season.
The first to report the news was CHEK news reporter Rick Dhaliwal, who Tuesday morning said the two sides were “getting close” on signing an extension. TSN insider Pierre LeBrun echoed the sentiment soon after.
In 2025-26, Coyle scored 20 goals and recorded a career-high 38 assists for 58 points, ranking fourth on Columbus in goals and points. In 14 NHL seasons, the 34-year-old forward has 209 goals and 334 assists for 543 points in 1,032 career regular-season games with the Blue Jackets, Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins and Minnesota Wild.
Coyle’s best offensive season came in 2023-24, where he recorded career highs in goals (25) and points (60) with the Bruins.
Coyle has also played 126 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Wild, Bruins and Avalanche, where he’s posted 26 goals and 27 assists for 53 points. He was part of the Bruins’ 2019 Stanley Cup Final run, where he scored nine goals and added seven assists for 16 points in 24 games that spring.
The East Weymouth, Mass., native was taken in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks. He spent parts of two seasons playing college hockey with Boston University, then joined the Saint John Sea Dogs midway through the 2011-12 campaign, where he helped the team win the President’s Cup and clinched a Memorial Cup berth.
The Blue Jackets finished the 2025-26 campaign with a 40-30-12 record and 92 points, fifth in the Metropolitan Division and seven points back of a Wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference.
