Greaves is the first reported netminder to be playing for the Canadian National Team at the tournament in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland next month. There are a number of veterans – John Tavares, Mark Scheifele, Robert Thomas, and Ryan O’Reilly – expected to lead the roster into the long-standing tournament.
Dreger noted that Hockey Canada is working on filling the other two goaltending spots. With the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs ending soon, a couple of quality netminders will become available. St. Louis Blues netminder Jordan Binnington, who played goal for the Canadians at the 4 Nations Face-Off and 2026 Winter Olympics, could be another option to don the Maple Leaf once again.
Greaves played the majority of the season for Columbus this year and did his part in helping the team have a strong second-half surge that nearly led them to grab a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. In 55 games, he posted a record of 26-19-9, with a 2.60 goals-against average, a .908 save percentage and two shutouts.
The Cambridge, Ont. native’s path to the NHL wasn’t an easy trek. He spent many years in the American Hockey League, most notably with the Blue Jackets’ primary affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters. He appeared in 158 regular-season games with Cleveland before becoming a full-time member of Columbus’ roster this year.
Greaves has never represented Canada on a major international stage. He’ll be joining a team that is looking to medal for the first time in three years. Canada is the record holder for the most gold medals (28) and total medals (53). The country won gold in 2021 and 2023, and silver in 2019 and 2022. Canada will kick off the tournament on May 15 against Sweden, and will face the likes of Italy, Denmark, Norway, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Czechia in Group B play.
