NHL hockey is still new to Salt Lake City, and it appears fans of the Utah Mammoth, now in their second season since relocating from Arizona, are trying to start up a tradition uniquely their own. Recently, fans at Mammoth home games have been whistling during play, making the Delta Center sound like an aviary.

It remains to be seen if Mammoth fans will keep up their whistling ways, but if the Mammoth players have any say in it, the trend would likely be abandoned in time for Friday’s home game against the St. Louis Blues.

Utah captain Clayton Keller was asked what he thought about Mammoth fans whistling, and he didn’t mince words when sharing his opinion.

“It’s been pretty disruptive, to be honest,” Keller said. “I don’t know where it’s stemming from, but if they can maybe quiet that down and do it after the game or before the game. A lot of us have noticed it and I think it would be better if it was not a thing, to be honest. I don’t know, maybe do something else, but not whistle.”

Keller seems to be speaking not just for himself but also on behalf of the team, given he is Utah’s captain and his use of the word ‘us’. We’ll see if Mammoth fans take Keller’s advice and move away from the whistling, or if they stubbornly keep it up.

Keller was also asked if he’s ever heard whistling like this at games before.

“No, I haven’t,” he said. “That’s the first time I’ve heard of it, or seen it, I guess. It was pretty annoying.”

Utah is in the midst of a seven-game home stand, so if Mammoth fans want to come up with something to replace the whistling, they’ll have plenty of chances to test out any new ideas.
