Chris Cuthbert named Foster Hewitt Award winner by Hockey Hall of Fame

Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Chris Cuthbert has been named the Foster Hewitt Award winner for 2026 by the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Cuthbert, 68, has been broadcasting games for Hockey Night, Sportsnet, TSN, and other networks for more than 40 years. He was most notably on the call for Sidney Crosby’s iconic “golden goal” for Team Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
The NHL Broadcasters’ Association votes each year on the award, which will be presented to Cuthbert in November as part of the annual Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. The award was first presented in 1984 and is named in honor of Foster Hewitt, who had a four-decade career of his own in hockey broadcasting and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1965.
“Chris Cuthbert has been a true professional and a wonderful link to hockey fans for many years”, NHL Broadcasters’ Association president Chuck Kaiton said in a statement on Wednesday. “His exciting play-by-play has captivated audiences across Canada. He is well deserving of this award, and I look forward to presenting it to him in November.”
A product of Brampton, Ont., Cuthbert began his radio broadcasting career at Queen’s University in the 1970s, providing commentary for Golden Gaels games in Kingston. He later moved on to call games for the SJHL’s Yorkton Terriers before turning to television in the 1980s.
In the decades since he made his Hockey Night debut, Cuthbert has received three Gemini Awards and two Canadian Screen Awards for his work. He is currently Sportsnet’s lead play-by-play broadcaster and was tapped once again to call this year’s Stanley Cup Final for the network.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Cuthbert expressed his gratitude for being recognized for his contributions to hockey broadcasting.
“As a kid I listened to Foster Hewitt and dreamed one day I could be that voice calling games,” Cuthbert wrote. “To be named a Foster Hewitt Award winner is the honour of a lifetime. Overwhelmed to be joining so many of my heroes and esteemed colleagues. Grateful to all who’ve helped along the way.”
Cuthbert will be on the mic as the Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes return to action for Game 2 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh on Thursday.
