Chicoutimi’s Jordan Tourigny suspended from remainder of 2026 Memorial Cup after stepping on opponent

A player has been kicked out of one of hockey’s biggest events thanks to a dangerous act.
On Wednesday, the Canadian Hockey League announced that Chicoutimi Saguenéens defenseman Jordan Tourigny has been suspended for the remainder of the 2026 Memorial Cup after stepping on Kitchener Rangers forward Christian Humphreys.
The incident came during Tuesday night’s game between the two teams. A little before the halfway mark of the third period, Tourigny and Humphreys, along with others from both the Saguenéens and Rangers, were battling for the puck along the boards. Tourigny decided to take his skate and step on the right foot of Humphreys, leading to the University of Minnesota commit falling to the ice in pain.
Tourigny was handed a match penalty for attempt to injure. It was his second penalty of the game. The Rangers went on to win the game, 3-2, going undefeated in round-robin play and advancing straight to Sunday night’s championship game.
The disciplinary action, as well as the tournament’s officiating assignments, was handled by the NHL. The NHL recommended that Tourigny be suspended for the remainder of the tournament, which was later accepted by the Memorial Cup Games Committee and the CHL Executive Council.
After the incident, Tourigny received a lot of criticism for his actions. That spawned the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League to release a statement, coming to the aid of the 21-year-old.
“Jordan Tourigny made a regrettable play in the third period, one he deeply regrets,” the league said hours after the final whistle. “However, the hate, threats, and violent messages being directed at him on social media have absolutely no place in our game or in our community. Our players are young athletes between the ages of 16 and 20. They deserve respect and support, even in difficult moments. Hockey is a game. Please treat these players with dignity. Thank you.”
Tourigny posted an assist in three games in the Memorial Cup, that coming in Chicoutimi’s tournament-opening loss to the Everett Silvertips. The Quebec City native was acquired by the Saguenéens from the Shawinigan Cataractes in an effort to bulk up their roster. The move paid off, as Chicoutimi won the QMJHL championship for the first time.
The Saguenéens went 1-2-0 in the opening round of the Memorial Cup. They can advance to the semifinal if the Kelowna Rockets lose to the Silvertips on Wednesday night.
