The Chicago Blackhawks won’t have their star forward for at least one game.

Head coach Jeff Blashill told reporters after Friday’s 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues that center Connor Bedard will not play in the team’s Saturday matchup against the Detroit Red Wings and will be evaluated for a shoulder injury.

Bedard suffered the injury on the final play of the game, losing the draw Blues’ forward Brayden Schenn then taking a cross-check, falling over backwards and appearing to be in immediate pain.

“I think it’s a freak accident, to be honest with you,” Blashill said, according to Chicago Sun-Times reporter Ben Pope.

Bedard finished the night with two assists, two shots and two penalty minutes in 20:46 of ice time. Through 31 games, Bedard has 19 goals and 25 assists for 44 points.

Nearly midway through his third NHL season, Bedard, the 2023 No. 1 overall, has 64 goals and 108 assists for 172 points and 181 career regular-season games.

Before turning professional, Bedard spent three seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Regina Pats, where he scored 134 goals and 137 assists for 271 points in 134 career games. In seven WHL playoff games, he scored 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points.

The Blackhawks are now 13-12-6 with 32 points, fourth in the Central Division and are one point out of a wild card spot in the Western Conference. After their game against the Red Wings, they head out to Eastern Canada for a three-game road trip to face the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators.
