Hurricanes register fewest losses by Stanley Cup winner in nearly 40 years

The Carolina Hurricanes took home the Stanley Cup for the second time in franchise history – and they nearly made some history, too.
With just three losses in 19 games, the Hurricanes have managed to win the Cup with the second fewest losses in a single playoff run, with a 16-game win minimum. The 1988 Edmonton Oilers hold the record with just two losses en route to a dominant title. Five other teams had just four losses throughout their journeys, the most recent being the 2022 Colorado Avalanche.
The Hurricanes swept the Ottawa Senators in four games before doing the same against the Philadelphia Flyers. Montreal scared the Hurricanes a bit with a Game 1 victory in the Eastern Conference Final before winning four straight. Vegas gave Carolina its toughest fight yet, winning two of the six games en route to the championship on Sunday.
The Hurricanes won the Cup for the first time back in 2006. The club started down 0-2 to Montreal in the first round before beating New Jersey in five games in Round 2. Carolina then needed seven games to win both of its next two rounds, but still managed to pull off the magic against Edmonton in dramatic fashion.
The last time the Hurricanes lost consecutive regulation games came in the first two outings of 2026 – Jan 1 and 3. They lost back-to-back regulation games only three other times this season and never had a losing streak longer than two.
The Hurricanes finished the postseason with 66 goals for and just 39 against. Despite the loss, the Golden Knights finished with 76 goals for – the most of any team in the postseason. Vegas also allowed the most goals at 62, with Montreal sitting second at 56.
Frederik Andersen won Carolina’s first 13 games in net, while Brandon Bussi had the following three.
