The Stanley Cup champions are not going to rest on their laurels this offseason.

Near the end of the 2026 NHL Draft, the Carolina Hurricanes acquired the rights to pending unrestricted free agent John Carlson from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for the No. 192 overall pick along with prospect defenseman Kyle Masters.

According to NHL insider Chris Johnston of The Athletic, the Hurricanes do not already have a deal worked out with Carlson’s camp, and are taking the opportunity to negotiate a new contract with him ahead of the opening of unrestricted free agency next Wednesday on July 1.

Carlson, a 36-year-old right-shot, spent the entirety of his career with the Washington Capitals, who selected him in the first round of the 2008 NHL Draft, until he was moved in a surprising trade at this season’s deadline to the Ducks for a first-round pick.

A huge offensive threat both at even strength and on the power play with a booming shot, Carlson has remained quite productive as he has aged. The Massachusetts native had 46 points in 55 games with Washington this season before the trade, and he tacked on 14 in 16 regular season games before a six-point effort in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

If Carlson opts to sign in Carolina, he’d join the reigning Cup champions as a Cup winner with extensive postseason pedigree himself. Among active NHL players, Carlson is 14th in playoff games played with 149, despite the fact that his teams have advanced beyond the second round just once– when the Capitals captured the Cup in 2018.

The Hurricanes would also check a widely-reported box for Carlson’s desired destination, as multiple reports have noted that he would prefer to return to the East coast.

According to PuckPedia, Carolina currently has $11.1 million in salary cap space for next season. Pending restricted free agent defenseman Alexander Nikishin is the only skater in need of a new contract, and the young Russian’s name has come up in trade rumors, with NHL insider Frank Seravalli reporting that the Hurricanes included him in a trade offer for Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck.

Carlson is ranked as the No. 2 free agent set to be available on July 1 on Matt Larkin’s updated top-50 free agent board.
