The Calgary Flames have signed center prospect Jonathan Castagna to a three-year, entry-level contract, the club announced Monday afternoon.

Castagna, 21, led the Cornell Big Red with 15 goals and 34 points in 34 games as a junior during the 2025-26 season. The Flames acquired the 6’2″ center from the Utah Mammoth as part of the MacKenzie Weegar trade earlier this month.

According to the Flames, Castagna’s entry-level contract will take effect with the 2026-27 season. The Toronto product is currently day-to-day with a lower-body injury and will report to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers on an amateur tryout deal for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

The Arizona Coyotes originally selected Castagna in the third round (No. 70 overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft, and he joined the rest of the Coyotes players and staff in transferring over to Utah during the 2024 offseason. The former St. Andrew’s College standout racked up 31 goals and 74 points in 101 games over his three years at Cornell.

On Mar. 4, the Flames acquired Castagna, defenseman Olli Maatta, and three 2026 second-round draft picks from the Mammoth in exchange for Weegar, who had served as an alternate captain in Calgary. Castagna helped Cornell win the ECAC in 2024 and 2025 and assisted in the Big Red securing a berth in this year’s NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Denver in the first round.

Castagna is the second collegiate center to sign with the Flames in recent weeks, joining Calgary product and St. Cloud State standout Tyson Gross, who inked a two-year ELC with the club on Mar. 12. The Flames still have four prospects remaining in the NCAA Tournament: North Dakota’s Cole Reschny, Abram Wiebe, and Cade Littler, plus Denver’s Eric Jamieson.

The Flames are set to kick off a six-game road trip on Monday when they take on the Colorado Avalanche at 6:30 p.m. Mountain. With nine games left to play in the 2025-26 season, the Flames sit in 29th place in the NHL with a 31-34-8 record and 70 points.
