Ducks acquire Jeffrey Viel from Bruins for fourth-round pick

The Anaheim Ducks have acquired forward Jeffrey Viel from the Boston Bruins in exchange for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, the clubs announced Friday morning.
Viel, 28, has appeared in 10 games with the Bruins this year, recording zero points and 30 penalty minutes. The 6’1″ left wing is known primarily as an enforcer and energy player.
In return, the Ducks will send the Bruins the better of their two 2026 fourth-round picks, which originally belonged to the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers.

In a corresponding move on Friday, the Bruins recalled defenseman Billy Sweezey from the AHL’s Providence Bruins on an emergency basis. The 29-year-old righty has one goal and 11 points in 34 games with Providence this season.
Viel spent the entirety of the 2024-25 season with Providence after signing a two-year deal with the Bruins as an unrestricted free agent. The Rimouski, Quebec product recorded 13 goals, 37 points, and 148 penalty minutes in 68 games with the P-Bruins last season.
An undrafted player, Viel spent most of his junior career with the QMJHL’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan, leading them to a league championship and Memorial Cup as team captain in the 2017-18 season. He parlayed that success into an entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks in 2019.
Viel made his NHL debut with the Sharks in the 2020-21 season and made his biggest impact with the club the following year, collecting three goals and five points (along with 114 penalty minutes) in 34 games during the 2021-22 campaign. To date, those five points are all Viel has mustered in 64 NHL games.
After parts of three NHL seasons with the Sharks, Viel spent the 2023-24 campaign with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose before joining the Bruins organization as a free agent. He is under contract through the end of the current season at a $775,000 NHL cap hit.
